Bonita Avenue Renovation Project Dedication Ceremony
The City is proud to announce the completion of the Bonita Avenue Renovation Project and invite the community to the Dedication Ceremony. This will be held on Bonita Avenue between San Dimas Avenue and Cataract Avenue on March 18, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. to celebrate the completion of the revitalization of our downtown.
With City Council direction, the City undertook the complete replacement and renovation project of the downtown corridor along Bonita Avenue between San Dimas Avenue and Cataract Avenue. This project was envisioned in 2014 and after considerable planning, designing, and receiving community feedback, construction commenced in June 2016.
The nature of historic downtown is sensitive to construction, with original buildings dating back to the early 1900s. The Renovation Project was designed to embrace this historic character and revitalize the downtown by providing a consistent ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) pathway through the corridor, as well as space for outside dining and display areas. Other features include bicycle racks and several benches placed throughout. The project also includes new Crape Myrtle trees, along with planter pots with drought tolerant plants, lighting and signage. Additionally, the street of Bonita Avenue and adjoining streets has been reconstructed and repaved with asphalt and chip seal made up of recycled tire aggregate. This recycled material makes use of old California tires which are otherwise a challenge to dispose of, and help to absorb the sound of traffic and provide a smoother ride.
The total project cost for renovation and street improvements came to $3,100,000 funded by the City’s General Fund Reserves and City Wide Lighting District Fund. Additionally, the City was awarded a grant from CalRecycle which supported some the street reconstruction and repaving with recycled tire aggregate.
The City wants to thank the community for its patience while construction was underway. This reconstruction and revitalization will be something residents and visitors alike can enjoy for many generations to come. We hope you join us to celebrate this emblematic project for the Dedication Ceremony March 18, 2017 at 11:00 A.M.
